1 Timothy 3:14…you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Timothy had been saved by grace which is demonstrated by his faith. He discovered the truth through the wisdom found in the Holy Scriptures. The Holy Scriptures often dismissed by modern society as irrelevant ancient writings. (Curious how other early day writings are often cataloged as classics.) Notwithstanding, 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Understanding that all Scripture is not only relevant and timeless, we desire to model the Acts 2: 42 record that states for us, The first century church continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
In the above text the, breaking of bread, can hold two reasonable meanings. Breaking of bread can simply mean, sitting down to a meal. Secondly, Theologians offer another acceptable meaning in which this, breaking of bread is the actual, Communion remembrance of Jesus’ finished work on the cross. Either idea is acceptable. What is interesting to notice when studying both these possibilities, the fact that both postures are centered around, Fellowship, Gathering, and Communing together.
1 Corinthians 10: 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
The word communion used here by the Apostle Paul can be translated into the Greek word Koinonia. A simple translation of Koinonia is: Communion, joint participation; the share which one has in anything, participation, a gift jointly contributed, a collection, a contribution. Even more simply stated, A gathering of like minded people.
For us Jesus freaks today, we will purpose to always move forward in our gathering of like-minded people centered around the finished work of Jesus Christ.
In conclusion and as previously pointed out, Timothy was to continue in the things that he had been taught beginning at childhood, from the Holy Scriptures. Certainly a word to the wise for us today.
